VEO delivered Fingrid’s Honkajoki 400 kV substation as a turnkey project. The project strengthens Finland’s national grid, enables the increasing integration of renewable energy, and supports Finland’s goal of carbon neutrality.
Project
Turnkey delivery of Fingrid’s Honkajoki 400 kV substation, a key node in reinforcing Finland’s national grid and enabling increased integration of renewable energy during 2024–2025.
What we did
Delivery of a five-bay 400 kV duplex switchyard, covering everything from civil works to substation automation.
Highlights
A large-scale delivery required multiple teams, VEO’s own personnel, subcontractors, component suppliers, and partners, to work together safely and on schedule.
“Based on our experience from two major 400 kV substation projects, we have strong confidence in VEO’s motivated and competent personnel. In the future, we will gladly work with VEO again on a common project.”
– Daniel Kuosa, Head of Substation Projects at Fingrid
Finland’s target of becoming carbon neutral by 2035 requires both a rapid increase in renewable electricity generation and continued strengthening of the national grid. Fingrid’s extensive grid investments ensure that new generation can be connected reliably and that transmission capacity meets future needs.
The new substation built in Honkajoki is strategically located in an area of Western Finland with significant wind power development and along key transmission corridors of the national grid.
“Honkajoki substation is an important node for the connection of renewables – especially the potential for wind power is significant. Honkajoki is also a crucial steppingstone along our 400 kV transmission connection from Finland’s west coast surplus area to the Tampere region,” says Daniel Kuosa, Head of Substation Projects at Fingrid.

End-to-end delivery from design to commissioning
Delivering a high transmission-level substation requires strong technical expertise and careful project management. At Honkajoki, VEO was responsible for the complete execution of the substation, from design and production to installation and commissioning.
The project was carried out with a broad team, including VEO personnel both on-site and at the factory, as well as subcontractors. The delivery also had a significant impact on VEO’s own production, not only within VEO’s substation segment but also in the relay cabinet production at VEO’s factory.
Although component availability was occasionally challenging in the market, careful planning, structured procurement, and close collaboration with the customer and partners ensured that the project progressed as planned and on schedule.
“A warm thank you to VEO’s project team and partners, whose expertise and contribution made the successful delivery of this significant project possible,” comments Antti Hiironniemi, Head of Sales Finland at VEO.
