VEO once again chosen as Neste’s partner at renewable product refinery in Rotterdam

February 28, 2023

Neste Oyj, the world’s leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel, has awarded VEO with a substantial switchgear order at its renewable product refinery extension project in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

With a current capacity of 1.3 million ton/year, the Rotterdam refinery is the largest renewable product refinery in Europe, and with Neste’s new investment, its capacity will grow to 2.7 million ton/year. The expansion is an important step for Neste in meeting the growing demand for renewable fuel products and ultimately in combatting climate change by the replacement of mineral fuels.

VEO has been Neste’s trusted partner in large-scale projects for close to 20 years, delivering the power distribution also to Neste’s renewable product refinery in Singapore and to the existing refinery in Rotterdam. The high technical requirements of the current Rotterdam extension project gave VEO the chance to once again prove its competence in delivering demanding and reliable switchgear for the oil and gas industry.

“VEO was our partner of choice again in Rotterdam. We know we can trust VEO’s skilled personnel to deliver the special features needed for the refinery’s power delivery and controlling, and we know VEO’s products are designed to be operationally reliable and long-lived”, says Markku Kuosmanen, Electrical Manager at Neste.

VEO’s delivery in Rotterdam contains the design and manufacturing of the low- and medium-voltage switchgear needed for all power distribution at the refinery. The delivery also contains the commissioning, the post-commissioning supervision and the related documentation of the project. The VEO components and technology delivered to Rotterdam are tried and tested at multiple refineries, where unexpected operational outages are unacceptable and maintenance intervals span up to 5 years.

The Rotterdam refinery will start its operations in 2026, and VEO’s project is set to be delivered in 2024 with the supervision continuing into 2025. Currently the project is in its design phase and VEO is working in close collaboration with Neste’s EPC contractor Technip Energies. For VEO, the power distribution project is significant for many reasons:

“Neste is one of our key customers and we are proud to continue and refine our long-standing collaboration with them. The Rotterdam project is extensive to its size, but its importance also lies in its value for the environment. Neste is actively working for a sustainable tomorrow, just as we are”, says Seppo Perätalo, Key Account Manager at VEO.
