VEO chosen to supply SF6-free 110 kV GIS switchgear for Caruna in Finland – a significant step towards a more sustainable power grid
September 22, 2025VEO has signed a major agreement with Finnish distribution system operator Caruna for the delivery and commissioning of a 110 kV GIS switchgear. The switchgear will become part of the new Finnoo 110 kV substation, a key project in strengthening the electricity network of Espoo, a rapidly growing city next to Helsinki.

The project is part of a broader investment programme aiming to double the capacity of Espoo’s distribution grid from 500 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts by the early 2030s. This expansion will enable the city’s growth and the construction of new residential areas.
VEO’s scope includes an SF6-free 110 kV GIS switchgear and its commissioning. In addition, VEO will be responsible for modification and dismantling works in the outdoor switchyard.
“This project is particularly significant for us, as it demonstrates that SF6-free solutions are now a reality in Finland and strengthens our position as a provider of cost-efficient, high-quality solutions that comply with the EU F-gas regulation. We are proud to support Caruna and the growth of the City of Espoo with cleaner and more efficient power grid technology,” says Juha-Petteri Lesonen, Sales Manager at VEO.
“VEO’s strategy is based on responsibility and technological leadership. This project is a concrete example of how we put that strategy into practice while supporting our customers in the transition towards more sustainable energy solutions,” adds Timo Ala-Heikkilä, CEO of VEO.
The project will start in autumn 2025 and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.
