VEO delivers electrical infrastructure for SMA Altenso’s first battery energy storage project in Finland

12.05.2026

VEO has been selected to deliver the grid connection and electrical infrastructure for the Alapitkä battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Lapinlahti. The project is developed by SMA Altenso GmbH and Infinergies Finland Oy and is one of the first large-scale battery energy storage projects in Finland, with the capacity of 95 MW and 220 MWh.

The rapid growth of renewable energy, increasing power price volatility, and rising grid stability requirements are making large-scale energy storage solutions increasingly critical in Finland and across the Nordics. The Alapitkä project directly addresses these needs as the BESS will provide frequency response services and participate in the day-ahead and intraday electricity markets.

VEO is responsible for the delivery of the grid connection and substation, including a modular E-house solution, from design and construction through to commissioning. The scope includes the high-voltage grid interface, protection and metering systems, as well as mechanical and electrical installation works for the energy storage equipment. VEO also serves as the principal contractor on site.

“Battery energy storages are becoming a cornerstone of future power systems, and projects like this show why reliable grid connection is essential for real-world impact. With VEO’s delivery model, customers can reduce on-site time and improve delivery safety without compromising quality. Strategically, this strengthens VEO’s position as a preferred partner for renewables and grid-side energy transition projects across the Nordics,” says Antti Hiironniemi, Head of Sales, Finland at VEO.

“We partnered with VEO due to their strong expertise in delivering complex grid and substation solutions, making them a highly reliable partner for the successful execution of this project,” Roberto Cabezas, Head of Procurement & SCM at SMA Altenso.

The project’s demanding schedule has required a fast start. Construction is already well underway, with VEO’s scope of delivery due for completion in 2027.

The project highlights VEO’s strong expertise in large-scale energy storage projects and its role in enabling the reliable integration of battery systems into the electricity network.
