In February 2020, VEO successfully completed the second 10/20kV substation renewal (Torsvik) in Lidingö, for the Swedish network operator Ellevio. Ellevio have a clear strategy to futureproof the important primary distribution network in the Lidingö muncipality, by renewing obsolete substations, securing the power distribution to both industry and private households.

Demanding local requirements

The location of the substation, in the middle of a residential area, placed strict technical and architectural requirements on the project. Due to the limitations of available space, all work phases, transports and lifts had to be exceptionally well planned to ensure a safe execution of the project stages while maintaining a good working enviroment.

To meet the architectural requirements, the substation was coated in bricks instead of the default painted sheet metal and the transformer building was coated in 3D shaped cement fibre cladding.

VEO’s modular substation solution

VEO’s modular substation solution was utilised in the project, allowing for the complete substation building to be pre-fabricated, assembled and tested at the factory in Vaasa, Finland. Thanks to the prefabrication of the substation building, time at site was minimised, reducing working time in close proximity to live equipment, thus keeping personal safety at a very high level. All primary components in this project were produced inhouse by VEO in Vaasa.

”The new station was built while the existing station was in full operation. Good planning and execution was necessary to succeed. VEO took full responsibility for their delivery and we are happy with the end result.”

”Torsvik was a challenging project due to the fact that the station is located in the middle of a residential area. The new station was built while the existing station was in full operation. Good planning and execution was necessary to succeed. VEO took full responsibility for their delivery and we are happy with the end result”, says Patrik Granström, Project Manager at Ellevio.

”We are proud to have successfully delivered this demanding project, where the new substation was built on the exact same location as the old station, which was in full operation during the project. To ensure safety and uninterrupted power distribution and taking the space limitations into account, the project was executed in several stages. We had to demolish the old switchgears, buildings and transformers step by step to create new space for the replacing equipment and buildings,” says Andreas Martin, Sales Manager, Substations, at VEO.

The modular substation building is getting increasingly popular in Sweden. It has already been used in the countryside, but because of the versatility of the building, it is now making an entry in urban areas.
