A significant step in VEO’s Nordic growth: turbine governor delivery to the Vittingfoss hydropower plant

VEO has signed a landmark contract with Ringerikskraft Produksjon AS to deliver a VEO turbine governor for a Kaplan turbine in Norway. The project will be carried out at the historic Vittingfoss hydropower plant and represents an important step in VEO’s expansion into advanced turbine control solutions for the Nordic market.

Located in Hvittingfoss, Vittingfoss is the southernmost power plant on the Numedalslågen river. Commissioned in 1919, the plant has undergone several upgrades over the years, with the most recent major expansion completed in 2014 to optimise water utilisation and increase capacity. Today, the plant operates four Francis turbines and one Kaplan turbine, producing nearly 150 GWh annually, enough to supply electricity to approximately 9,100 homes.
 

At Vittingfoss, the Kaplan turbine plays a key role in managing the plant’s variable head range of 13 to 20 metres and a total discharge capacity of 206 m³/s. By integrating VEO’s state-of-the-art turbine governor, Ringerikskraft aims to improve operational efficiency, reliability, and responsiveness to the evolving and increasingly complex requirements of the power grid.

The delivery reflects VEO’s continued commitment to innovative solutions for sustainable energy production across the Nordic region. At the same time, the project further strengthens VEO’s position within hydropower modernisation and digitalisation.
 

A long-term partnership supporting the plant lifecycle

The agreement builds on a long-standing collaboration between VEO and Ringerikskraft. Over the years, VEO has delivered a wide range of modernisation and support projects at Vittingfoss, including:

• Control and Automation upgrades for G1–G4
• Medium- and high-voltage system improvements (5 kV, 66 kV)
• Control system enhancements (HMI upgrades for G3 and G5)
• Water level measurement and regulation systems
• Remote access solutions and cybersecurity improvements
• Protection systems (shaft current protection)
• Server renewal and historian database implementation
• Spare parts supply and maintenance support

Together, these projects form a long-term collaboration that supports the ongoing development of the Vittingfoss hydropower plant and advances Norway’s hydropower infrastructure.
