By the end of this year, VEO’s long-term customer Vaasan Sähkö will begin to recover the heat produced at Pått wastewater treatment plant in Palosaari, Vaasa. VEO will provide the automation needed to run the technology of the new heat pump plant.
At Pått wastewater treatment plant, the wastewater from the entire city of Vaasa as well as parts of the neighbouring municipalities Korsholm and Malax is purified. The treated wastewater produces heat, which will soon be recovered at Pått’s new heat pump plant and fed to the local district heating network. The 50-60 GWh of heat produced will warm up about 2000 single-family houses in Vaasa.
VEO will provide the automation for Vaasan Sähkö’s heat pump plant as a turnkey delivery. As the brains of the plant, the automation optimises its operations by measuring, calculating and adjusting the processes for the highest possible efficiency and reliability.
“In order for our plant to operate optimally, the automation is critical. It ties together all interfaces to the main devices and the main automation of the new heat pump plant. We chose VEO through competitive tendering, but we are very happy to work with a local partner and use competence from the Vaasa energy cluster. VEO’s project management and quality of work has been excellent in previous projects and we are pleased with our choice”, says Juha-Matti Karvala, Project Manager at Vaasan Sähkö.
The heat recovery of Pått wastewater treatment plant provides Vaasan Sähkö with a demand response opportunity, which, together with the thermal energy storage facility in Vaskiluoto, can shave off peaks in electricity demand, making the district heating network a part of local energy load management. Also lowering emissions, the investment is an important step for Vaasan Sähkö towards carbon-neutral energy production and a decentralised energy system. For VEO, the project is show of trust from a returning customer and a testament to VEO’s know-how in heat recovery automation and electrification.
“This project is a continuation to our long-standing collaboration with Vaasan Sähkö and the many heat recovery automation projects we have executed in Finland and abroad. It helps in curbing the climate change internationally and meeting the emission standards set by the Finnish government and the EU. This delivery also supports VEO’s strategy to be a trusted supplier of automation and electrification solutions in national and international sustainable energy projects”, says Rami Luoma, Sales Manager at VEO.
