In 2021, Finnish energy company Fortum finished its largest wind farm project to date in Finland. The 90-MW wind park is located in Kalax, Närpes and has 21 turbines with an annual energy production that can keep the lights on in 83 000 households. VEO is proud to have delivered a substation to the Kalax wind farm, which is a testament to VEO’s ability to supply high-quality electrical products and know-how at any scale.

The scope of VEO’s deliveries are always tailored to customer needs. In Kalax, VEO’s delivery contained everything from planning to building the substation, but the civil works were carried out by the client according to VEO’s plans. Based on VEO’s modular substation concept, the Kalax substation was manufactured, installed, and tested as far as possible in VEO’s factory in Vaasa. The controlled factory conditions ensure a short delivery time, high quality, and the utmost attention to occupational safety. Only the final installations and commissioning of the substation are done on site.

As one of the most significant energy companies in Northern Europe, Fortum is a valued customer for VEO. The collaboration has gotten off to a great start in Kalax, and now VEO has signed a substation contract with Pjelax Vindkraft, a joint venture of Fortum and energy company Helen for two wind power projects in Närpes (Pjelax-Böle) and Kristinestad (Kristinestad Norr). These parks are set to be operational in 2024.

With 56 wind turbines, the Pjelax-Böle and Kristinestad Norr wind farms will have a shared capacity of 380 MW. As Helen will purchase approximately half of the generated wind power, the parks will play a crucial role in the company’s coal phase-out. The scale of this project is substantial for all involved parties and shows that VEO’s substation concept can flexibly be adapted even to very large wind farm executions.
