VEO chosen as supplier in Fortum’s urban data centre heat recovery project
September 25, 2023In Espoo, Fortum is turning data centre waste heat into district heating. Fortum has trusted VEO in supplying the electricity distribution solution for its new Mankkaa heat recovery plant.
To recover heat from two local data centres, Fortum, one of the leading energy companies in Europe, is building a water-to-water heat pump plant in Mankkaa, Espoo. Once finished, the plant will provide heat to the district heating network in Espoo, Kauniainen and Kirkkonummi to warm up the equivalent of 2000 single-family homes. The investment is a significant step towards both Fortum and Espoo’s commitment to producing affordable, carbon-neutral district heating during the 2020s.
Fortum has chosen VEO to supply a substation and the electricity distribution system to the Mankkaa plant. The EPC delivery includes products and services, such as project planning, a VEO E-House modular substation, low- and medium-voltage switchgear and bus ducts, transformers, supervised installation, commissioning, and customer training. The project is to be ready during Q1 in 2024.
A substation designed for an urban environment
As the Mankkaa heat recovery plant will be located in an urban environment in Espoo, its substation must adhere to strict and rigorous building regulations and architectural requirements. Collaborating with an architect, VEO has designed its modular E-House substation to fit well into its surroundings. The E-House substation will be fully assembled at VEO’s factory in Vaasa, which enables high quality control and a shorter delivery time. With less work done on site, the solution is also cost-effective.
“With VEO’s modular E-House solution, the Mankkaa substation can flexibly be placed on a compact plot. Although the solution is partially standardized, VEO’s designers have customised it according to our needs, maintaining the highest quality standards. In these challenging times, when there is still a global shortage of components and logistics are causing challenges, VEO is committed to sticking to project schedules. This is very important for the success of our project, which has progressed seamlessly thanks to the smooth cooperation between Fortum and VEO”, says Otto Schütt, Project Manager at Fortum.
A quarter of a century of collaboration
VEO has delivered automation and electrification solutions for Fortum’s energy production and distribution projects for 25 years already. Just as VEO, Fortum is working to curb climate change and create a cleaner future by promoting sustainable energy production with less environmental impact.
“Fortum has trusted VEO as a collaboration partner for many years already, and we are proud and happy to have been chosen for yet another of its heat recovery projects. The Mankkaa project is significant in our work to enable the green energy transition through our expertise”, says Rami Luoma, Sales Manager at VEO.
