An efficient and modern power plant benefits its owner and society but also achieving the common climate goals
October 2, 2023Energy transition is done plant by plant, with optimally designed solutions and partners sharing a common vision. Vattenfall, the Swedish multinational producer of fossil-free energy, trusts VEO with the renewal of all electrical and control equipment at Ritsem Hydropower Plant, situated right by the source of Lule River. The large, 304-MW power plant is an important producer of hydropower in Sweden, and with the update, Ritsem will continue to run for decades to come.
Ritsem Hydropower Plant, originally commissioned in 1977, is said to be the last major construction built in the Swedish wilderness. Its waters travel from Lake Sitasjaure through a 16-kilometer-long tunnel before dropping nearly 200 meters to the plant turbine hall to produce power. From there, the water continues to Lule River.
The remote Ritsem plant sports a complex set of electrical and control systems, most dating from its original commissioning in the 70s. These systems are now to be modernised by VEO as an EPC project, which will be finished in 2025. The plant’s new equipment will mainly come from VEO’s own factory and include a majority of VEO’s product lines.
”A fairly isolated power plant like Ritsem needs reliable equipment, as it is unmanned, hard to reach in winter-time and remotely controlled. We are honoured to once again be trusted by Vattenfall Hydropower in such an important project, which is comprehensive to its scope, both in equipment and in manhours”, says Ville Vieri, Head of Sales, Sweden & Norway at VEO.
VEO and Vattenfall share a dedication to sustainable energy production – something, which was important for Vattenfall when choosing VEO as its partner at Ritsem.
”Vattenfall is leading the way to fossil freedom. Working with sustainable suppliers such as VEO is fundamental to our work for the green energy transition. In addition to VEO’s environmental focus, we also appreciate VEO’s extensive experience and its flexibility in creating technical solutions that fit our exact needs”, says Nina Chlot Selberg, Project Manager at Vattenfall.
“This project further represents VEO’s dedication to creating a fossil-free and sustainable future. The project adds to VEO’s extensive portfolio of projects related to the on-going energy transition”, says Jakob Lövdahl, Vice President, Sales and Marketing at VEO.
