Kemijoki Oy and VEO to cooperate on the renovation of the Taivalkoski hydropower plant
January 8, 2024Kemijoki Oy and VEO have teamed up on various hydropower plant projects over the past decade. Now, the renovation of the Taivalkoski hydropower plant in Keminmaa marks another milestone in this productive partnership.
The Taivalkoski power plant, completed in 1976, is one of the largest hydropower plants in Finland. It generates an average of 540.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy annually, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 76,700 four-person households.
As part of the renovation of the Taivalkoski power plant, the current two 100 MVA three-phase transformers will be replaced with two new transformers. VEO will handle the delivery, replacement, and protection of these transformers through an EPC contract.
This update will enhance the transformers’ efficiency and reduce energy loss. It’s a significant move towards more energy-efficient power generation.
Refurbishing the electrification and automation systems at the Kurkiaska hydropower plant in Sodankylä is one good example of the many successful projects that VEO has implemented together with Kemijoki Oy earlier. Read more about the Kurkiaska project.
Years of smooth collaboration with VEO convinced Kemijoki that they were the right partner choice for this significant Taivalkoski project as well:
“VEO has consistently delivered high-quality projects with successful results for us, making it easy to approach this new project with confidence in their capabilities”, says Kemijoki’s Project Manager Juho Tuominiemi.
